Infections that can be transmitted by the use of unsterilized tattoo equipment, poor quality or contaminated ink, cheap tattoo needles, dirty tattoo studios, not keeping the tattoo clean, unsanitray inviroments such as a dirty house and sometimes even polluted or contaminated water can cause infection.
Some of these infections can lead to problems such as herpes simplex virus, tetanus, staph, fungal infections, some forms of hepatitis, tuberculosis, and HIV.
If you think your tattoo is infected it's best to consult your local gp.
It's reccomended to stay out of any pools, hot tubs, spas, saunas etc. Especially in a place were there is or has been other people in it. It's advised not to wet your tattoo too much, it should be realatively dry most of the time.

A good way to avoid tattoo infection is to check whether the tattoo artist’s equipment is clean and sterilized. At least that way, you eliminate that particular source as a reason for the inspection. Of course, proper care on your part is still the best way to mitigate infection, if not totally evade it.
