A brief article on ancient tattooing

Ancient Tattoo's

Tattooing has been a standard human practice since around the Neolithic times. Otzi the Iceman, a frozen man found in the Otz valley in the Alps, dating from the fourth to fifth millennium BC,  had approximately 57 carbon tattoos, they consisted of simple dots and lines on his lower spine. He also had tattoos behind his left knee, and on his right ankle. These tattoos were thought to be a form of healing because of their placement which resembles acupuncture. Thier is also evidence of ancient tattoo's on mummies found in egypt. Mummies bearing tattoos date back to the end of the second millennium BC.

Julius Caesar describes tattoos of deep blue and scarification markings in Book 5 of his Gallic Wars This was in 54 BC.

Tattooing in Japan is thought to go back aprox ten thousand years ago. Ancient japanese warriors would tattoo thier face in an effort to break the spirit of enemies.

Many other cultures have had tattoo traditions ranging from rubbing cuts and other wounds with ashes, to hand-pricking the skin and henna.
